🌈 The Power of Color in Interior Design
When it comes to interior design, one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s arsenal is color. 🌈 Beyond aesthetic appeal, color can have a profound effect on our psychological and emotional state. An interior designer can expertly harness the power of color and guide thoughtful and intentional color choices to transform a room in ways that can positively influence mood, energy, productivity, and wellbeing.
How I work with Color
As a corporate finance executive, I was focused on individual performance driving outcomes. Now, as an interior designer, my work turns the concept of performance on its head. Take a home office renovation. Clients are focused on how they need to perform in their home office – their schedules, goals, the to-list of the day. But, as their interior designer, I’m focused on how the home office needs to perform for them – what goes into the space and how to optimize lighting, texture, finishes, and, yes, color in ways that will improve energy levels, focus, mood, comfort, even confidence.
Some examples of applying the concept of high-performance into designing spaces include:
Kitchens that are energetic and joyful or calm and sophisticated, where cooking and entertaining is less chore and more fun.
Children’s spaces that are conducive to creative play or calm reading or focused study.
Bedrooms and bathrooms where all design choices support the ideal of a peaceful, relaxing, and luxurious environment.
I love bringing creativity and beauty to solving problems. 🥰 When the right color choices are made, we can create an environment that supports you. And, when your spaces perform for you, they will enable you to perform at your highest potential. 💯

Deploying Color Psychology in Interior Design
Let’s break down some specific uses and effects of color.
1. Mood and Emotions
Can you recall the color of a room that made you immediately feel warm and welcome? How does the kaleidoscope of colors in a summer sunset make you feel? 🌅 Does a field of sunflowers lift your mood?🌻
Color Impact in Action:
Red and orange can create an energetic atmosphere, enlivening meal preparation and stimulating appetite in the kitchen and social interaction in living rooms or dining rooms.
Yellow brightens mood and inspires happiness, creating an uplifting atmosphere in a kitchen. Soft shades instill joyful ambiance in a dining room or cheerfulness in a child’s bedroom.
Blue and green evoke calmness and relaxation, making them great choices for bedrooms or bathrooms where rest, peace, and tranquility are a priority. Darker shades can create an appealingly moody environment for lounge areas or a home theatre.
Purple in a dining room can create a sense of luxury and sophistication and stimulate conversation, a useful energy for dinner parties and social gatherings.
Pink is known to soothe the nerves and relieve feelings of anger and aggression.
2. Energy Level
Consider how energy levels should differ in different spaces.âš¡
A kitchen has a task orientation that dining and living rooms do not, even though all are gathering spaces. A home office should support productive work. Colors in the bedroom can promote a relaxing and romantic atmosphere. 💕
Color Impact in Action:
Yellow and red are known for increasing passion, energy and alertness, but too much make a space feel too intense. Use strategically in kitchens, dining and living areas, home offices or home gyms. Muted, deeper shades of red in a bedroom are softer and less harsh on the eye.
Blue and green in a kitchen is ideal for those who prefer a less chaotic, more subtle energy. They also evoke a sense of cleanliness and sophistication. In a home office, blue can enhance focus and creativity and help one feel centered and confident.
Green in a bedroom promotes restfulness, balance, and serenity by helping to lower stress and encouraging restful sleep.
3. Creativity and Focus
Certain color palettes can unleash creativity 💡 and infuse personality in your space. Whether bold and vibrant or subtle and soft, color can spark spontaneity and innovation or support calm concentration.
Color Impact in Action:
Blue in a home office can enhance focus, concentration, innovation, and mental clarity, while maintaining an energy of calm.
Green is the color of growth and has been shown in studies to encourage creativity and problem-solving. It also helps minimize eye strain, which is helpful when working long hours in a space.
Orange stimulates critical thinking and memory. It strikes a balance between red and yellow, bringing the energy of the former and the optimism of the latter.
4. Confidence and Performance
Research provides insight into colors that minimize inhibitions, boost confidence, and create a productive environment. 💪
Color Impact in Action:
Purple is associated with royalty, so using it in a home office can inspire feelings of power and confidence. Purple accents in a bedroom can make the space feel luxurious.
Yellow lifts spirits and self-esteem, creating a sense of enthusiasm and confidence. However, the wrong yellow or too much yellow may give rise to feelings of anxiety.
Black is a statement-making hue that can give a space lots of personality. It’s stylish in dining rooms and bedrooms. It’s association with wisdom makes it a natural choice for home offices. Adding white or pops of color will balance the dark, brighten a space, and elevate the mood.
